Is the coronation of Rahul Gandhi, the heir apparent of the Congress, on the anvil?

It was in Jaipur where he was named the party vice-president and again it is from Jaipur a proposal to elevate him to the post of party president has been moved.

The newly-nominated members of Pradesh Congress Committee on Tuesday proposed the motion of his coronation. The proposal was approved by AICC vice president Mohan Prakash, following which general secretary CP Joshi tabled a proposal to authorise the party president Sonia Gandhi and Rahul to decide on it.

With this development Jaipur becomes a turning point in the political journey of the Gandhi scion. On December 19, 2013 at Birla auditorium, a Congress working committee (CWC) had declared Rahul the vice president. Nearly after four years, the history is being repeated.

Another striking similarity between these two conferences is strength of delegates who attended the meeting and gave consent to his elevation. The Chintin Shivir in 2013 was attended by nearly 350 delegates of CWC who witnessed Rahul’s change in guard as vice president. Surprisingly, the PCC members gathered to propose his name for the president’s post has a strength of 358, besides 58 co-opted members.

Now, the proposal will be sent to AICC where Sonia and Rahul will take the final call. The party sources said that all state Congress committees by one by will pass the proposal. Then a AICC session will be convened where reigns of the party will be passed in the hands of Rahul Gandhi.

Though, his coronation appears a formality as most of the party’s decisions, be it planning election campaigns or restructuring the organisation, are being approved by him. And when Rahul becomes formally the president, Sonia Gandhi will assume the role of a guide.

The meeting has also passed unanimously two proposals requesting both Sonia and Rahul to elect new PCC head and members of AICC panel. AICC general secretary CP Joshi and leader of opposition Rameshwer Dudi had tabled both proposals.

Those who were present in the meeting were State President Sachin Pilot, Pradesh Election Officer Kewal Singh Dhillon. Former CM Ashok Gehlot skipped the meeting as he was busy in elections campaigning in Gujarat.

‘Power is poison’

Rahul had made an emotional speech after his elevation to the post of vice president in 2013.

He said, “My Mom came to his room and cried... because she understands that power is poison,” said Gandhi after taking over the new mantle.

“Last night each one of you congratulated me. My mother came to my room and she sat with me and she cried... because she understands that power so many people seek is actually a poison,”  Gandhi said at the AICC session of Birla Auditorium organized on December 20, 2013.
