If you went to bed with a fan switched on Saturday night, you must have woken with a chill on Sunday morning. This is because the temperature in the city has gone down, thanks to the unseasonal thunderstorm and hailstorm in several parts of the state on Sunday.

Several parts of the state, including Sikar, Bikaner, and Alwar districts experienced a heavy hailstorm for about 15 minutes. Further, Churu experienced  1 mm rainfall, while, Bikaner saw a 0.4 mm rain.

The Meteorological Department has released a warning that thunderstorm accompanied with hailstorm is likely to occur at isolated places in North-East Rajasthan. The report further states that light rain and thunderstorm is likely to occur in Alwar, Bharatpur, Dholpur, and Jhunjhunu districts.

The Pink City also experienced heavy dust storm and a little rain during the day. While the city experienced a minimum temperature of 18 degree Celsius on Sunday, it is likely to drop to 16 degree Celsius on Monday. The unexpected rainfall and thunderstorm resulted in severe damage to the crops which were on the verge of being harvested. Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, on Sunday, directed the district administration to estimate the crop losses and prepare a report on the same.

According to the experts, depending on the size and time of the hailstorm, the crop damage can go from 20 to 50 per cent.

“If the hail is a gram-sized, then the crop damage goes upto 30 per cent. The time duration for which the hailstorm took place also matters. All kinds of crops get damaged. Crops which are at the maturity stage get damaged the most. Sikar usually has wheat, barley, gram, and little mustard. These crops cannot be revived and the farmer has to bear the brunt of the destruction,” said Dr PK Sharma, dean, College of Agriculture, Bharatpur.

CROPS CROPPED

  1. Unexpected hailstorm resulted in 80 per cent crop failure of Psyllium in Didwana of Nagaur district late afternoon on Sunday. Further, crops of Wheat and Gram were damaged upto 50 per cent. It is to be noted that psyllium and wheat crops were at the maturity stage and were about to be harvested.

  2. The heavy wind and storm also resulted in a fire in the forest at Aravalli hills in Udaipur. This was because the hills were already incandescing due to change in weather. The fire brigade found it difficult to control the flames as it grew into kilometres in diameter.
