The Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital management on Wednesday was forced to take the circular which banned the media persons from taking pictures or making videos on the hospital premises.

Two days after its release health minister of the state Kalicharan Saraf was forced to quashed the order after the matter was raised by the opposition in the House during the ongoing budget session of assembly.

The matter was related to the circular imposing ban on photography or videography by media in SMS Hospital, the largest government health facility of the state which is attached hospital of SMS Medical College.

The circular dated February 12, 2018 signed by medical superintendent of SMS Hospital says that “photographers of print and electronic media take photos of various buildings of the hospital and publish negative news without any authorised information which are against the facts. Such news affects the image of the hospital adversely. Therefore, all heads of the department, unit in-charge, administrative officer, medical officer in-charge, nursing superintendent and other concerned have been directed that without the permission of medical superintendent, they should not allow photography or videography of their department or work place. In case, any person is seen taking photos, inform the security guards and the hospital administration.”

When contacted by DNA, SMS medical superintendent Dr DS Meena said that “there are some media persons who do photography or videography without permission and malign the image of the hospital,”

“We have media cell at the SMS hospital and in case, if any photography or videography is required to be done then the person concern should contact Dr SS Yadav, who is the in-charge of the cell, and take necessary permission,” said Dr Meena.

However during the ongoing budget session of assembly, Govind Singh Dotasara, Chief Whip of Congress raised the issue, asking that “what is the thing in the hospital that the circular intends to hide from public?”

The uproar on the circular forced the government to clarify the situation and quash the order. Health Minister Kalicharan Saraf said that “media is the fourth pillar in democracy and the SMS hospital management has been directed to withdraw the order.”
