Smoking in pregnancy may give newborn heart disease

One of the most established facts about tobacco consumption is that tobacco use is a major cause of cancer, but it is also a major threat to heart diseases equally. During pregnancy, if the mother consumes tobacco, then the risk is greater that the newborn may be born with heart disease due to its effect. 

Heart experts from across the country and abroad shared and discussed such heart diseases, their cause, prevention and treatment during the closing day of the 19th conference of International Society for Heart Research (ISHR) organised by Indian branch of ISHR in association with Rajasthan University of Health Sciences (RUHS).

On the last day of the conference, many diseases related to heart including cardiovascular diseases, non-surgical valve repair and replacement and tobacco-generated heart diseases were discussed. Dr Deveshwar Dev from Orissa, in a session, told that during the pregnancy, if the mother consumes tobacco, it affects the child directly and the possibility for the child of having congenital heart disease gets double.

Dr Ravindra Singh Rao, course director of the conference gave information about the latest technology TAVR processor for valve replacement and furnished fact in the Indian context. He also demonstrated the live inbox case of the TAVR process. 

“With this technique, more than 200 valves have been replaced without any open surgery, through the artery of the leg in India so far. Of these, 30 valves are made in India,” said Dr Singh. “In the TAVR process, the Indian valves are very effective in the elderly and there is no need of pacemaker at all. The patient’s recovery is faster and the risk of stroke is less than one percent,” he added. 

The program organiser and additional principal of SMS Medical College Dr SM Sharma said that during the three-day event, the letters related to the techniques and treatment of heart disease were presented. Experts working in the field of heart treatment also felicitated on last day. The chief guest of the closing ceremony was Dr KK Talwar, former Chairman of MCI and Dr Rajababu Panwar, Vice Chancellor of RUHS.
