Farmers at Ninder area in north west of Jaipur called for hunger strike “Anshan” till Gandhi Jayanti to protest land acquisition by Jaipur Development Authority (JDA).

At Gopalpura Bypass, traders affected with demolition drive went on sit-in while at Kishanpole traders flocked against Jaipur Municipal Corporations exercise against few shops. This Wednesday, the civic authorities were faced with protest at several parts of the city.

The idea of development at ‘Smart City’ is thus facing resentment at various local levels.  As for the civic authorities, its a rather disturbing trend. “A Smart City can not be developed without mutual cooperation and people thus must try understand the requirement of development measures,” says Ravi Jain, chief executive officer of Jaipur Municipal Corporation.

Representatives of various trade organisations came to visit him on Wednesday after the municipal corporation imposed “carrying charge” on few shops at Kishanpole area occupying the walkway in front of their shops. It was in fact on very instructions of JMC CEO that action was initiated on these shops. However, despite the talks the officer said that efforts to vacate the “Varandas” (walkway) will continue “with cooperation of local traders.”

Another civic body, the JDA is faced with rather more vehement protest at Gopalpura and Ninder area. These protests are long standing and affect the locals far more gravely.  At Gopalpura hundreds of traders have lost their business after their outlets got demolished for “occupying road width”. These illegal constructions have come up at the road width over past several decades unabated by responsible authorities.

At Ninder those protesting are to lose their ancestral properties for a residential scheme proposed by JDA. “It is not development, it is displacement without human consideration,” says Nagendra Singh, leader of agitating residents of Ninder.
