The state government had formed the functioning committees of Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) just a month ago, but six out of the 26 committees of the municipal corporation would not be able to work for the next three months as the work will be done by the Empowered Committee formed by the state government.

The Empowered Committee has been formed in each urban local body for the camps organised under the Mukhyamantri Jan Kalyan Yojna by orders issued on April 25 last year. The decision has been taken so that public’s work could be done quickly during the camp. This committee was formed for two months but later its term was extended till June 30, 2018. Now, the state government has increased the Empowered Committee’s tenure till September 30.

In JMC, the Empowered Committee has been constituted under the chairmanship of Mayor Ashok Lahoti. This committee has been given the power of 21 articles of Rajasthan Municipality Act 2009. Last year, when the Empower Committee was formed, the municipal corporation’s functioning committees were not formed. The State Government has constituted 26 functioning committees of JMC on May 17, 2018. In such a way, the 21 articles of Municipality Act which have been given to the Empowered Committee are related to JMC’s Building Plan Committee, Compounding Committee, Gaushala Committee, UD Tax Committee, Executive Committee and the Finance Committee.

So, till September, there won’t be much work left for these six functioning committees. After September, the code of conduct for assembly elections will be implemented and all JMC committees will not be able to work during that period.

“There is a contradictory situation in the JMC due to the extension of Empowered Committee’s tenure. Empowered committee will do the work of six committees, what will these committees do? The State Government should issue a clarification on this,” Vishnu Lata, BJP’s senior councillor and former chairman of license committee told DNA.
