Scuffle at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital over arrest of trio under SC/ST Act

The people of Brahmin community protested at the Sardarpura police station on Sunday after a scuffle took place between a patient’s family and resident doctors at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital on Saturday night. 

They were protesting the arrest of three people who were nabbed under SC/ST Act applied on Saturday night on doctor’s report.

Bilara resident Bheraram was admitted to Bed No. 10 of Surgical Ward. On Saturday night, when the drip of the patient was out, the relatives informed the doctor about it but the doctors did not hear for a long time and as a result, a heated argument started between the two sides. The angry family members started creating a ruckus in the ward. The family members alleged that the doctor was drunk and was talking in insolence manner. The argument started on that point turned into a scuffle. The scuffle between patient’s family and doctors continued for nearly half an hour in front of the police. 

When the situation became uncontrollable, Sardarpura police reached there and controlled the situation but both the sides demanded taking action on each other. The police had to call RAC. According to the police, the family members of the patient and doctors also called their colleagues after the argument turned more intense. Many of the doctors from the hostels also joined the resident doctors who were allegedly intoxicated with alcohol. On this, the police had arrested three sons of the patient in the case of breaching the peace on Saturday night. On Sunday, after presenting these three to the magistrate, they were arrested under the SC/ST Act.

On this, the people of Brahman community under the leadership of former councilor Kanhaiyalal Parik, protested outside the Sardarpura police station demanded the removal of the clauses of the SC/ST Act on Sunday morning. After protesting for nearly half an hour, the police station assured them that if the case will not be found under the SC/ST Act, the Act would be removed.
