Dream of a former police director general, Dharam Pal Gupta for contributing to his department has materialized in a scholarship program for the children of policemen at state duty. The scholarship shall now help children of police officers and staff to realise their dream of education from institutes at the United States.

The family of the former police officer has provisioned for Rs 51 crore for the scholarship scheme through the Dharam Pal Gupta foundation. Unveiling the scholarship scheme at a ceremony held at Rajasthan Police Academy (RPA), chief minister hailed education as the ‘best’ gift.

“A person gifted with knowledge is able to overcome all hurdles, it is the best gift for any child. The scholarship is a step in the direction,” said chief minister Vasundhara Raje thanking the philanthropist family on behalf of state police.

Late Dharam Pal Gupta was born in Alwar district of the state and retired as DGP in June 1984. However, his affection for the department did not retire and his sentiment has been materialised by his son Pradeep Yohanne Gupta and daughter in law Linda Haynes Gupta in form of a scholarship to be funded from the linked investment of the Rs 51 crore fund.

Also present at the ceremony, director general of Rajasthan police, Ajit Singh Shekhawat held it as a milestone in extending quality education for wards of police staff. “Children from police families will be selected by the foundation through a procedure after they had cleared their 10th standard examination,” said DGP Ajit Singh.

The scholarship will be extended on basis of merit and not on need base and will cover all expenses, academic and boarding. A board of the foundation that also includes a couple of police officers from the state will decide on the applications. As per the founder director of the foundation, Pradeep Yohanne Gupta has spent all family savings to fund his education at the USA. These financial hardships faced by his father inspired him for the scholarship program.
