Now, young couples tying the knot will take eight ‘feras’ instead of customary seven. In a unique initiative by Sikar district collector Naresh Thakral, the eighth round will signify vow against female foeticide.
Pandits performing marriage rituals will ask the bride and bridegroom to take extra round of the holy fire and take a vow to ‘save the daughter and teach the daughter’. In a bid to ensure success of ‘beti bachao, beti padhao’ programme, Thakral came up with the idea of linking it with religious customs and rituals. Recently, he held a meeting with pandits and requested them to participate in ‘beti bachao beti padhao’ campaign in the district.
Subsequently, he asked them to make young couples take an extra ‘fera’. The pandits have lauded the district collector’s initiative and assured him of their full cooperation.
