Countries across the world have amassed a stockpile of nuclear weapons. India too has such weapons and is surrounded from two sides by countries who have accumulated these weapons. Though a nuclear war is unlikely, the armed forces of the country cannot leave anything to chance and thus on Monday, the strike formations of the Sapta Shakti Command during the ongoing Exercise Vijay Prahar, played out probably one of the most dangerous battle field scenarios – a contaminated battle field after a nuclear blast. The troops played out Chemical, Biological, Radioactive and Nuclear (CBRN) defence drills in the sweltering heat of the Thar desert.

In today’s time, a nuclear attack may be a last resort in any battle, but no country can be sure if the attack would never happen. In such a scenario the Indian Army has been gearing itself up to fight and win in the contaminated battle field. For the purpose the Army has procured equipment and fighting gears while it is still strengthening its inventory. Considering the existing ground realities drills and procedures have evolved over a period of time and it was time to fine tune the drills and assess the capabilities.

As the exercise is reaching its culmination, the troops of the Sapta Shakti Command, practiced fighting dirty in a battle field where a nuclear bomb has been exploded by the adversary. Troops practiced day in and day out in the scorching heat and blizzards to fine tune the drills and procedures to fight the destroy the enemy in a battle space contaminated by nukes.
