Four poultry farm units set around two decades ago by an IAS officer for about 84 tribal families in Kishanganj and Sahabad areas of Baran district are now lying abandoned due to apathy of officials and alleged corruption.

Sahariya tribals once engaged in the units are forced to rely on daily wages.

The then additional district magistrate (ADM) in Baran, Somnath Misra, in 1998 under the Sahariya development project had set up four poultry farm units each in Khushayari, Ganeshpura, Nayagaon of Kishanganj and Khushalpura in Sahabad areas of Baran district which gave employment to 21 families at each of the four poultry units.

The units started yielding dividends but with the routine transfer of the officials and alleged corruption by the other officials led to disconnection of electricity and water supply to the units which resulted in deaths of chickens.

“We were well availing of the benefits of the poultry units and were also earning well but the greed of the supervisors and veterinary staff ruined the units and now we are forced for as daily wage labourer, alleged 65-year-old Leelabai Sahariya whose husband Prabhulal was the caretaker of the poultry farm unit in Khushayari. The supervisors of the units forced the people engaged in the poultry farm units to sign the bank papers after the electricity and water supply to the units was cut off for but they did not give a single penny to Saheriya tribe, she alleged.

Misra along with his wife earlier this week visited the area to take a stock of development and progress was disappointed see the ruined state of farm.

Misra reportedly asked the district officials accompanied with him at Khushayari to revive the project but the local officials expressed inability to do so due to unavailability of the funds.

“Misra assured the tribe here to inform the matter about rival of poultry units in the area to state government,” said Khushayari gram panchyat sarpanch Ramdayal Metha.
