Till last Thursday, chief minister Vasundhara Raje was wary of only Ashok Gehlot in Congress. She would not have had it in wildest of her dreams that a 40-year-old Congress leader less than her son Dushyant’s age will bring the worst ever nightmare during her tenure. BJP didn’t lose two Lok Sabha and one assembly bypolls. It lost all the 16 assembly segments which constituted Alwar and Ajmer Lok Sabha constituency and the Mandalgarh bypolls sending chill of fear across the partyline especially in BJP ruled Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh where bypolls are due. This is for the first time, Sachin Pilot also emerged as a new hero of state Congress piercing through the shadow of Ashok Gehlot.

Since 2014, Congress has been able to won 6 out of 8 bypolls besides registering victories in panchayat and local bodies polls. So winning these seats is not making much noise than the  emergence of Pilot as a strong leader who can lead the party to create history. The clean sweep filled new enthusiasm and confidence in the grand old party which has been suffering factionism for quite some time. Pilot, who spearheaded Congress to victory on all these seats, was seen in complete control over the party cadre and the way Sachin used the experience and political guile of senior leaders like Ashok Gehlot and C P Joshi to the benefit of party, he has shown the Pilot is ready for take off now.

The unprecedented increase in vote share  of Congress from last elections indicates the hard work Pilot put in on individual seats. He got the caste equation and ticket distribution right to propel the anti incumbency factor to Congress’ gain. In Alwar, the vote share of Congress went up from 38.8% in 2014 to whopping 60.6% this time. Similarly, in Ajmer Raghu Sharma got 50.9% of votes - more than 40.3% what Sachin Pilot got garner when he contested this seat in 2014. In Mandalgarh also, despite the presence of strong rebel Congress candidate, Vivek Dhakad succeeded in just less than matching the last time’s vote share of 40%.

The vote share clearly indicates that all the small camps of Congress have now merged for a single campaign - wresting power from BJP. Ashok Gehlot, who is one of the most popular mass leader, was seen standing behind his ‘president’ with all his might. The increase in Congress vote share - a sizeable chunk from the Mali and SC voters clearly show the Gehlot magic working in favour of Pilot and the party. The party high command realises the importance of Gehlot.

The new found chemistry behind Pilot and Gehlot, which proved decisive in these bypolls, is learnt to have designed in party’s Delhi head quarters. Sachin Pilot is a close aide of Rahul, who discovers a rare chemistry with Gehlot during Gujarat’s successful campaign. Now Rahul is said to have used his influence to bring youth and experience and the first delivery of this deadly combination is the big bang victory in the bypolls.

The High Command now wants to carry on with this magical formula. And it is understood that the High Command is working on power sharing formula between Gehlot and Pilot to ensure smooth ticket distribution for the upcoming assembly polls.
