Congress has demanded a probe into failure of the weather forecast on the fateful day of May 2 when dust storms hit several parts of the state taking away the lives of nearly 33 people in Bharatpur, Dholpur, Alwar and Jhunjhunu. Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee chief Sachin Pilot visited dust storm affected Bharatpur, Dholpur areas and met the victims’ kin on Sunday. Senior party leaders of the areas accompanied him during the tour.

Pilot went to storm-affected areas two days after Raje reached the spot. She, apart from Rs 4 lakh compensation announced by the government for the kin, declared Rs5 lakh at the personal level for the family.

However, Pilot has termed assistance by the government insufficient. He demanded government jobs for the kin along with additional financial help. Accusing the lapses at the government level, as there was no warning issued for the storm allegedly, the state Congress chief also asked for a stern action against the concerned officials.

“We appeal the government to give government jobs to kin of those who lost lives, additional compensation for livestock and financial help for constructing houses which were damaged during the storm. There was serious lapse with the disaster management department which failed to issue a warning,” said Pilot who was accompanied by Deeg-Kumher MLA Vishvendra Singh in Bharatpur while visiting families of the victims.

Pilot further demanded a probe into how the department and MET department failed to issue a warning of the storm of which forecast was released in advance. Damages at such large level could have been avoided had the warning issued on time, “It should be probed, and stern action must be taken,” Pilot added.

On Friday, chief minister Vasundhara Raje toured the storm-hit districts of Bharatpur and Dholpur and met the victims’ kin in person.

APPEAL TO GOVT

“We appeal the government to give government jobs to kin of those who lost lives, additional compensation for livestock and financial help for constructing houses which were damaged during the storm. There was serious lapse with the disaster management department which failed to issue a warning,” said Pilot during his visit to Bharatpur and Dholpur.
