Agitated over the caste-based reservation and recent violence during the SC/ST Bharat bandh, a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Raghuvir Sharan Agarwal, set himself ablaze in full public view at Vaishali Nagar in the city on Sunday morning.

The man spilled petrol on his body before setting himself ablaze. Locals rushed in and doused the fire. However, by that time, the man had received severe burn injuries.

He was rushed to hospital from where his family members took him to Delhi for further treatment.

Notably, the man even wrote a letter urging the youth of the nation to not get divided but work for the development of the country.

Agarwal used to run a chemist shop near a dispensary in Vaishali Nagar area. “Around 6 am, Raghuvir left his home and reached the Amrapali circle. He was carrying petrol in a bottle. He then set himself ablaze and his shrieks were heard by locals who were shocked to see a man in flames.

A few people rushed towards Raghuvir and using sand and other items, doused the fire. The Vaishali Nagar police was also informed and a team rushed to the spot. The man was taken to hospital and his family was contacted. “The family has taken Raghuvir to Delhi for better treatment,” officials said.

Meanwhile, Raghuvir wrote in the letter why he took such a drastic step. In the letter, Raghuvir asks the youth to be together and soak themselves in the spirit of nationalism. He also urged them not to let the sacrifices of the freedom fighters go waste. “All those who consider themselves sons of the soil should let go their differences and assemble at one spot to take an oath that they will never do anything that can give the country trouble. Sabka ek mandir, ek kuan aur ek shamshan hoga (everyone should have one temple, one cremation ground and one well),” the letter read. Furthermore, the man writes in the letter that nobody is responsible for his extreme step.
