To ensure crude oil production doubles in the Barmer basin, Vedanta’s Cairn Oil and Gas has made an investment of Rs 37,000 crore in Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) programme. On Sunday, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurated the programme for Mangala-Bhagyam-Aishwarya (MBA) areas to increase crude oil production from Barmer oil fields.

This programme will help in achieving 5 lakh barrels of oil per day (BOPD) production target from Rajasthan as the project will double the crude oil production. Currently, 2 lakh barrels daily of oil is being produced there. According to the company, the production will increase to 3 lakh barrels daily on the basis of capital investment plan of Rs 12,000 crore for which the work has already  been started. Moreover, in the next few years, production will increase to 5 lakh BOPD with the help of a total investment plan of more than 37,000 crore rupees.

Immediately after inaugurating the EOR project in Central Polymer Facility in Barmer, the Union Minister interacted with a group of young engineers as well as a group of women petroleum engineers, who have emerged as a symbol of women empowerment in the oil and gas sector.

Sudhir Mathur, CEO of Cairn Oil and Gas in the Mangala processing terminal, said that the company has proposed to double the production and the MBA-EOR project will play an important role in achieving more production goals. “Mangala EOR project can provide additional production of 200 million barrels from this region, while Bhagyam and Aishwarya EOR can provide an additional production of about 60 million barrels over the next 12 years,” he added.

It may be mentioned here that Cairn has planned to upgrade the Mangala Processing Terminal to handle 13 lakh barrels of liquid. Apart from this, Mangala will carry forward the alkaline surfactant polymer flood programme with more than 200 wells drilling. About 70 extra wells are planned for Bhagyam and Aishwarya.
