Mithali Raj, India women’s cricket captain, who created a world record by becoming the first player to cross 6000 runs in the history of women’s ODI, wanted to be a Bharatnatyam dancer.

However, her father had different plans for her and took her to a cricket coaching camp in Secunderabad when she was 10. And as they say rest is history.

On Tuesday at Jaipur’s Neerja Modi School grounds, there were girls who wanted to emulate their hero Mithali Raj. The recent success of Indian women’s cricket team has given a new fillip to girls who want to wield the willow which was evident from the rush at the trials of the Rajasthan Royals’ Royal Colts on Tuesday.

Initially, the trials were just for boys but the enthusiasm of a few girls changed the entire course of trials.

Watching the trials from the sidelines, these girls mustered courage to walk to Zubin Bharucha, head of cricket of Rajasthan Royals, and asked him if they could also give trials.

Looking at their enthusiasm Bharucha instantly decided to open these trials for girls also. “We wish to take some meaningful steps to be able to achieve our goal of developing cricketing talent in the country. At a time when competition for female sporting talent is growing in the country, I feel we are moving in the right direction by declaring Royal Colts trials now open to women also,” Bharucha said.

The trials will be open from October 13-15 for the women candidates. The candidates who wish to give trials can come at Gate 6 of Neerja Modi School at 7.30am on all three days.

The response to trials can be gauged from the fact that many children came with their parents while some against their wishes. One boy who had come despite oppositon from parents said, “Sir, jis din select ho jaayenge, mummy papa apne aap maan jaayenge.”

A single mother was overjoyed at the selection of her son for the second round. “It is a proud moment for me especially because being a single mother and raising my kid along with supporting his passion for cricket was difficult but I did whatever I could. I am very thankful to Royal Colts for giving him this opportunity. I hope he does well and makes it to the final selection. My blessings and support is always with him, ” she said.

Speaking of the trials on first day, former Indian off-spinner Rajesh Chauhan said, “It is great to see such a huge turnout for the trials. From the pool of talent that was put to test today, we are happy to see some exceptional bowlers whom we have shortlisted.”

Day 2 of the trials will begin on Friday (October 12) at 7.30 am at Neerja Modi School. Those interested must report at Gate No 6.
