Gyan Dev Ahuja, BJP MLA from Ramgarh in Alwar, on Wednesday trained his guns on the home minister while expressing concern over deteriorating law and order situation in his home district.

During question hour, he demanded that home minister Gulab Chand Kataria should order a probe against the Alwar SP, who Ahuja also accused of indulging in corruption.

Ahuja said he had apprised home minister and top officials of state police of the misconduct by the SP, but no action was taken. He did not named the SP.

In reply, Kataria said he himself had seen improvement in the law and order situation in Alwar. But Ahuja repeatedly questioned him on the issue of ordering a probe against Alwar SP. Kataria responded by assuring the House that the government would not spare anyone found guilty. But no one could be held guilty on the basis of allegations alone, said Kataria. For ordering a probe against the officer, written and detailed information was required.

Incidentally Alwar is the district where Pehlu Khan was beaten to death by cow vigilantes. The incident had sparked widespread criticism and protests.

Citing an incident in Bharatpur where an assistant sub-inspector allegedly beat a woman, Ahuja questioned the government on the law and order situation in the state. He said that even though the entire department could not declared corrupt, some officers need to be probed. This, said Ahuja, is necessary as corruption is not possible without patronage of senior officials.

Replying to Ahuja’s query about number of policemen arrested for accepting bribes, home minister informed the House that 200 police personnel had been arrested on the charges of graft in the last four years (from 2014 to 2017). A total 275 cases of graft were registered against policemen. Out of these 200 were arrested in 171 cases.

According to Ahuja, most of those arrested were low rank policemen like constables, head constables, assistant sub-inspector and sub-inspectors. He asked why senior officers like deputy SP or SP were not caught.

The minister then informed the House that action was taken against Indian Police Service and Rajasthan Police Service officers also. Three IPS officers have been also arrested and jailed in cases of corruption. Ahuja was joined by Congress whip Govind Singh Dotasara in raising the issues and cornering the government.

House that!
