Minister of State (Independent) for Youth Affairs and Sports Rajyavardhan Rathore has sanctioned a special financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to former International Archer and Arjun Awardee Limba Ram who is suffering from neurodegenerative disease and presently undergoing treatment in Jaipur. The minister has relaxed norms to sanction the ex-gratia to the sportsperson.

Limba Ram is currently engaged with Rajasthan government and is getting salary beyond the ceiling of Rs 4 lakhs fixed under Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay National Welfare Fund for Sportspersons.

“The minister in his capacity as Chairperson of the Fund, has relaxed the condition and by invoking the discretionary clause sanctioned Rs 5 Lakh considering that his widowed mother, widowed sister and her children, widowed mother-in-law and unemployed brother are dependent on him,” said a statement released by the ministry.

Earlier, on getting the news of Limba Ram’s admission to a hospital, the minister had deputed a team of officers to visit and enquire if he required any other assistance.  “The sanctioned amount is based on the report of this Committee. The minister has also asked his officers to regularly visit him and give update on his health,” added the statement.

In April this year the matter of his poor health first came to light when Limba Ram’s colleagues at Rajasthan State Sports Council’s Archery Academy, where he was serving as a coach until recently suspected that the archer was unwell after his walking and speech was affected. Limba Ram, who has represented India at three Olympic Games, was later admitted to Sawai Man Singh Hospital where he is undergoing for treatment.

Limba Ram also won the Arjuna Award in 1991 and was conferred the Padma Shri in 2012.
