The new Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore is a man to watch in the sports world. While retaining his “strategic presence” in the I&B Ministry as the next man in command, the Prime Minister and Amit Shah have virtually promoted or upgraded Rathore as a Union Cabinet Minister with an independent charge of sports.

The entire sports world is jubilant on the elevation of a renowned and decorated sportsman as the Sports Minister. For the first time in the history of independent India, a sports-loving Prime Minister has done this experiment. Matching with the expectations of the sports community, Rathore, on day one, after taking the charge of his new responsibility, had publicly announced that now the real VIP in his Ministry will be the sportspersons only.

The ministry of sports and youth affairs has decided to pay a monthly stipend of Rs 50,000 to each elite athlete preparing for the coming Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and Tokyo Olympics. The amount would be used by the athletes for their out of pocket expenses, Sports minister Rajyavardhan Rathore announced on Friday.  The government has selected 152 elite under the TOP (Target Olympic Podium) scheme who will get benefit from this decision. The money will be paid with effect from September 1, 2017.

Since his Army days, Rathore always had a keen interest in the area of sports and even before becoming the Sports Minister, he had been actively persuading the cause of a lesser known Indian sports like “Kabbadi” in his home constituency of Jaipur rural by frequently organizing a well-attended series of “Kabbadi” matches.

His presence in the I&B Ministry is also helping him to publicize these domestic games via popular TV channels.  By camping every Saturday and Sunday in his Parliamentary constituency, Rathore is confident to make his comeback in 2019.
