Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has accused previous Raje government of extorting Rs 25,000 per liquor shop across the state. He claimed that MRP (maximum retail price) price on liquor bottle was intentionally hiked in the previous regime to cheat masses in order to swindle lakhs and crores that reached the then ‘power centre’.

“The BJP government had established a record in looting people. It is the first government which looted people openly by hiking prices of liquors. Rs 25,000 was extorted from each shop across the state at that time,” said Gehlot on Monday.

The three times CM also said that entire machinery turned corrupt in BJP regime and there were people in the regime, who for meeting their own expenses, were looting people. “They did many wrong things which
we are correcting,” Gehlot added.

Gehlot, who is known for regulating measures on alcohol consumption in his previous governments, has already taken steps to ensure a ban on the sale of liquor after 8 pm at all shops in the state. 8 pm is the official time of closing shops, though there were reports that many shops are kept open to sell it illegally at a higher price. It mushroomed a liquor mafia in the state. In previous assembly elections, it was learned that vendors were ‘allowed’ to sell illegally so they could make money freely and also the higher authority could make money for the election expenses. The excise department, despite rampant complaints, failed to take actions against the vendors.

Hence, Gehlot on Saturday chaired a high-level meeting at the CMR and issued directives to check illegal sale of liquor after 8 pm. The CM said that those caught selling liquor after 8 pm would be penalised; their shops would be sealed and licence would be cancelled as well.

Gehlot, addressing to excise and senior cops, reiterated that in 2008, his government had initiated a similar policy to check sale of liquor in state after 8 pm which gave a positive message to the society, hence the same has to be enforced again. Gehlot also ordered the officials to stop illegal transportation of liquor in the state.

‘All were corrupt’

The three times CM also said that entire machinery turned corrupt in BJP regime and there were people in the regime, who for meeting their own expenses, were looting people. “They did many wrong things which
we are correcting,” CM Ashok Gehlot said.
