Horse riding requires immense mental peace that comes with practice, said ACP Ishan Bhardwaj, a city-based police officer, currently posted with Delhi Police. Bhardwaj, was recently awarded silver medal for Show Jumping at 36th All India Police Equestrian Championship and Mounted Police Duty Meet-2017.

Bhardwaj, 27, also informed that the most difficult thing in horse riding is to get in the rhythm with the horse.

“The basics are important, but once you learn that, you have to be in the rhythm with the horse. It is technical. Earlier I took it lightly and assumed that we just have to sit on a horse and pull the reins. However, it is not like that, it takes a lot of mental peace. Yoga and meditation is a must for horse riding. This only comes with practice. Horse is a very delicate animal. He will only allow the rider to go ahead after he knows that the rider understands him. Otherwise, he will kick you and make you taste the ground,” Bhardwaj said.

While talking about his training, Bhardwaj said that he was introduced to horse riding in February 2017, during police training. This championship was his first competition.

“I never touched a horse before that. I was, however, introduced to sports early in my childhood as I played national in Volleyball and state level Judo player. I participated in championships till 2006. Once I started excelling in other fields like PT drilling, classes, and arms training, I was at ease. Then I focused on horse training,” he said.

Talking about his future plans, Bhardwaj said that he now aims to go international with horse riding.

“I am aiming for Asian games. I will first participate in several horse shows, this was police nationals, then there are senior nationals, in next two years, before going internationals,” he said.
