Rajasthan Assembly faced uproar over farmers loan waivers as the BJP MLAs accused Gehlot government of not waiving loans as promised in 10 days while  storming the well leading to adjournments.

The leader of Opposition Gulab Chand Kataria called the loan waiver order as langda (handicapped) to which CM Ashok Gehlot objected demanding Kataria to take back his word.

As the proceedings began in the house RLP MLA Hanuman Beniwal raised the issue of loan waiver on which he forwarded an adjournment motion but Speaker CP Joshi allowed the members to speak for two minutes.

After Beniwal, Kataria raised the issue saying that order issued on loan waiver by the government is absurd. He claimed that one month and one day has passed since the order but the farmers were not benefited within 10 days as promised.

“The farmers are in a fix over the order; who are the eligible ones to get the waiver is not clear in the order. How the order will be implemented is also not clear... You have issued a Langda (handicapped) order deceiving the farmers,” said Kataria.  Deputy leader of the opposition Rajendra Rathore joined him and raised questions on the order saying it was not issued in consent with the finance department.

Responding to the Opposition, Gehlot said the government had taken a decision and its implementation will take time.

“The government’s intention is that maximum farmers benefit from the loan waiver. A committee had been formed to decide the eligibility criteria and the government had also written to the Centre to help the state get the farmers out of financial crisis. You (BJP) need not worry about it and you just announced Rs 50,000 loan waiver to the farmer,” said Gehlot showing a letter written to the prime minister Narendra Modi in which he demanded complete loan waiver across the country.

Gehlot attacked the BJP for describing the order as “handicapped”.

“I object to the Opposition terming the government order as ‘handicapped’. Order can never be handicapped but it is the thinking of the opposition. Our ideology and policies are clear. You (Kataria) should take back the word,” he said.

Though, the BJP legislators were not satisfied with Gehlot’s reply and raised demand for complete loan waiver. “A letter has been written to the PM. It was not a condition to waive loan,” said Kataria. Later the BJP MLAs stormed the well, shouted slogans disrupting the proceedings of the House. This led to adjournment thrice till 2.15 pm.
