Teachers at University of Rajasthan, like others, have resorted to Dharna and protests to fight for their basic rights. The teachers continued to protest for the sixth day, as associate professors await promotion under the Career Advancement Scheme and implementation of the seventh pay commission.

The protest has been organised by All Rajasthan University Teachers Association outside the office of the vice chancellor. The organisation has also written multiple letters, including one to the chief minister, seeking redressal.

“The Supreme Court had approved that everyone should be given promotion, which will be calculated from the initial date of appointment. The promotion is not being conducted. Also, the retired professors are not receiving their pensions,”said Dr NM Sharma, a university teacher.

“Associate professors at all state universities have been promoted under CAS, except University of Rajasthan,” Sharma added.

He further informed that this is not only affecting the professors, but is also harmful for the university, as less number of Ph D scholars will be able to take admissions.Since an associate professor is only allowed to guide five students while a professor is allowed to take eight students. The promotion will benefit about 400 Ph D scholars. Notably, there are two ways to become a professor - first is through direct selection where 55 posts out of 60 are vacant, the second is when associate professor is promoted as professor, which has 150 seats and most of them are vacant.

Talking about the seventh pay commission, Sharma stated that the notification for the seventh pay commission has been issued by the UGC, and state government has also approved it. However,it has not been implemented at any university across the state for teaching faculty.

“There isn’t much financial benefit attached with the promotion, however, as the designation will go up, we get other benefits,” he added.

Seek Redressal

The protest has been organised by All Rajasthan University Teachers Association outside the office of the vice chancellor. The organisation has also written multiple letters, including one to the chief minister, seeking redressal.
