Tonk, the home constituency of PCC chief and deputy CM Sachin Pilot, has got a booster dose of infrastructure projects. The PWD (public works department), helmed by Pilot as the minister, has declared Tonk a PWD zone, approving several projects including beautification works and bridge on Banas River.

On Pilot’s directions the department has given status of a zone to Tonk and under its jurisdictions Dausa, Sawai Madhopur circles will also be covered. The minister in the directions issued argued that continuous footfall of tourists in Sawai Madhopur area generating higher volume of traffic and mining activities in Tonk and surrounding areas necessitated the PWD to declare it as a zone.

“By getting zone status now the PWD will be starting road and other works. An office of additional chief engineer will be set in the area to speed up the works,” said a senior official with the department while informing about the development. Currently, Tonk circle was part of Ajmer zone while Sawai Madhopur falls in Bharatpur zone. All divisional headquarters are already declared zones.

Meanwhile, PWD has approved many development and infrastructure projects in Tonk district. Resurfacing of 41 km long road has been approved by it in a recent meeting. Also, the department has decided to forward a proposal to widen Tonk-Nagar-Nainwa state high way to the Union government for approval.

“A high level bridge has been approved on Banas River that would ease transport to and from Tonk-Gehlod-Javli-Naner-Dholi area. The detailed project report has been approved for the project and soon a consultancy agency would work upon it,” said the official. He also added that a detailed project report on beautification of Tonk city will be prepared.

Sources said that PWD is working on a war footing to launch development projects on the directions of Pilot who represents Tonk Assembly constituency. As the Lok Sabha elections are round the corner Pilot wishes to ensure development of the area so  that Congress during election campaigning could show report card of works.

Tonk-Sawai Madhopur seat is crucial for Congress as it has an Assembly constituency represented by Pilot, who is both deputy CM and head of the state Congress. In 2014 BJP’s Sukhbir Jaunpuria had won Tonk Lok Sabha seat.
