Rajasthan: Shutters down! In response to the country-wide bandh called by the Savarn Samaj

Shops, schools and markets inside the Walled City didn’t open on Thursday in response to the country-wide bandh called by the Savarn Samaj. The shutdown was total till after noon and was largely peaceful across the state.

Massive response to the Bharat Bandh was seen in the city on Thursday. The bandh was called by Savarn Samaj (upper castes) against the amendment of the SC/ST Act. As a result, most of the markets remained closed in city, on Thursday. Several schools and educational institutions were also closed for the day. The management had voluntarily decided to keep the schools closed and texted the parents Wednesday evening. There was no instruction from the district administration to the schools in this regard. 

Walled City markets which are considered to the fair test of success of any bandh were completely closed and locks were seen on the shutters on shops in Johari Bazar and other markets.

Outside the Walled City, the markets of Vaishali Nagar, Tonk Road, Tonk Phatak, Bajaj Nagar, Gopalpura crossing, Mansarovar, Sodala, Gurjar ki Thadi remained shut during the day.

Only the doctors’ clinics, medical shops and a few tea stalls were open. The shopkeepers who had closed the shops were seen gossiping and having tea at these tea stalls.

A significant thing about this bandh was that at most of the places, the business community had observed the bandh by itself. There was no force used or needed to close the shops at most of the places. Moreover, the bandh was organized and executed entirely on the social media.

In most of the bandhs, the shops start opening after noon time. However, this time the shops and markets remained closed till late evening. At many places, the employees did not turn up for work at the offices.

However, there was some agitation at Kho Nagorian area near Paldi Meena where the police had to control the agitators.

At every nook and corner, police officials were present to control any untoward incident. The cops had remained on alert mode since the last couple of days itself. On Thursday they had taken the president of Samta Andolan Parashar Narayan Sharma in custody.

Thursday Noon, Sunday Feel

Police was on alert near Ambedkar Circle. Quick Response Team remained stationed near the Ambedkar statue to prevent any untoward incident by anti-social elements. The personnel were posted throughout the day near the statue. The presence of police was also seen due to the assembly session which is currently underway.

  • There was no forceful closure of shops in Jaipur and other cities 
  • The markets remained closed for most part of the day on Thursday
  • The entire bandh in Rajasthan was planned and executed on the social media 
  • Schools declared a day off. There was, however, no order from the Collector
