Raising saffron flags, supporters of an Independent candidate took out a rally in Kishanpol constituency of Jaipur. Appealing for votes, they were targeting sitting MLA Mohan Lal Gupta from ruling BJP over temple demolition issue.

“The party claims to be the well wisher of Hindutva, but not only temples were demolished under the present government, even the local MLA made no efforts towards conserving the heritage temples,” Independent candidate, Bharat Sharma alleged while targeting the BJP for neglecting sentiments of local people. Sharma, had been agitating on the issue of demolition of Rojgareshwar Mahadev Temple and several other temples to make way for underground Jaipur Metro construction. Even as the government later reconstructed a couple of temples, the issue continues to haunt the BJP.

Sharma is not the only one to question the BJP on the temple demolition issue, the Congress too has raised the issue on several occasions.

“Why did Yogi Adityanath not object when temples were being razed by BJP government in Rajasthan,” Congress state president Sachin Pilot had commented during a public gathering.

However, as Hindu hardliners’ votes still remain a far cry for Congress, the Independent candidate do not shy away from raising the saffron flag.

“It is the BJP that has disappointed us, by repeating the MLA candidate who did nothing to represent resentment of local residents when their government officers pulled down heritage structures that were hundreds of year old,” said Sharma while making it to be an issue of local heritage.

Demolition of temples had become an embarrassment for the state government and had even witnessed a major protest from RSS. The government had since made several attempts to douse the protest, yet it finds saffron flags being waved against it by an Independent as a mark of protest in the Walled City area of state capital Jaipur.

Sparks Fly

“The party claims to be the well wisher of Hindutva, but not only temples were demolished under the present government, even the local MLA made no efforts towards conserving the heritage temples,” Independent candidate, Bharat Sharma alleged.
