Rajasthan’s largest multi-level hospital, the SMS has emerged as a global leader in the number of surgeries performed in a year. The hospital to post its annual achievements on Friday claimed that more than 2.5 lakh surgeries were held at the hospital during the past year. The number stands much above the AIIMS’s, New Delhi record of 1.94 lakh surgeries in a year.
“There were 79,970 major and 1,85,188 minor surgeries held at the hospital during the past year,” said Dr Sudhir Bhandari, principal and controller of SMS Medical College while addressing a gathering of current faculty members and veterans of SMS Medical College at a clinico-pathological meeting.
During the meeting, he highlighted the academic performance and charter of patient-related care done in 2018. It was informed that the hospital treated more than 60.66 lakh patients during the year while on part of medical research, 548 papers of the medical college faculty were published in journals across the globe.
“SMS Hospital, which is the largest government health institution in Rajasthan, is one of the largest hospitals in terms of infrastructure, patient care and research,” said Dr Bhandari. However, not all the medical education faculty are appeased with the numbers. They said that the rising number of patients has been deteriorating the health facilities. These doctors suggest for the hospital being made a ‘referral only’.
“The AIIMS and other major multi-specialty centers only accept cases referred from another hospital. This ensures that those with complex issues get priority treatment of the available specialty facilities,” says a health officer. The SMS medical college and affiliated hospital being a state government undertaking, however, stands open to all patients. Patients from several other neighbouring states also arrive at the hospital for treatment.
The Numbers
Dr Bhandari apprised that 548 original research papers including international papers in index journals were published by the faculty of SMS Medical College in last one year.
