While monsoon is still far off, it’s raining opportunities for folk singers in Rajasthan. Politicians of all variety, levels and parties are queuing up at their makeshift studios to get the artists to quite literally - sing their paeans. They are preparing songs and videos praising the neta and glorifying his political stature and elaborating his work and achievements.

The songs are 3 to 5 minutes in duration and in Rajasthani language with interesting videos to accompany. The neta is praised, his achievements elaborated and enumerated; all this in a song with catchy lyrics and music.

The small video clips are then systematically uploaded on the internet and made viral on social media to select audience. Union Ministers, MLAs, opposition leaders, political parties; have all caught the publicity bug.

“I have made several videos for politicians including Union minister CR Choudhary, Hanuman Beniwal and others. I understand their demand and create the videos along with my team. The entire next year is election season and we are being approached almost daily,” said Hariram Kiwada, a folk artist. Seeing the success of these videos, Dausa collector has issued instructions that the same method be used to promote government schemes. “I have formed a group of like-minded government employees by the name of kala jattha and we promote government schemes among the rural public. The videos have become very popular,” said Mahesh Acharya, literacy project officer, Dausa.

The experiment had first caught fancy of leaders during farmers’ agitation and recent by-elections in the beginning of the year.

Singing praises of kings has been a tradition with several communities who used their composing skills to create songs. The satisfaction of the king guaranteed them gifts and monetary gains. But these new age praise singers compose songs for politicians at a fee that is decided beforehand.
