The Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) has appointed a four-member committee to screen irregularities at district associations and affiliated cricket clubs. RCA executive to have ordered the committee held that the decision has followed complaints of mismanagement at various clubs. “In simple terms, the committee will profile working of all the district cricket associations affiliated with RCA. Action will be taken against those violating the association norms,” joint secretary of RCA Mahendra Nahar told DNA.

Appointment of the committee though takes the conflict of cricket politics at Rajasthan to the base unit of cricket clubs. An ongoing power game between sitting RCA president CP Joshi and camp of former association president Lalit Modi has held district cricket associations (DCAs) in state divided for more than a year. The infighting has even lead to dissolution of the RCA executive by cooperative registrar, however, an appellate authority overruled the registrar’s order and restored the executive body.  Back with an apparent vengeance, the RCA executive dominated by those close to CP Joshi is now working to put an end to Lalit Modi’s influence at every level of Cricket in Rajasthan.

Even as Lalit Modi has resigned from all posts of cricket in Rajasthan soon after his son Ruchir Modi lost election of RCA president, the influence of Modi camp continues. A close aide of Lalit Modi, Rajendra Singh Nandu was able to secure the vital position of RCA secretary and has since been cause of concern for Joshi camp. Backed by nearly half of the district cricket associations, Nandu has been running a parallel administration within RCA.

Screening of the district cricket is expected to tilt the power balance. The process for affiliation of cricket clubs by district association and functioning of the clubs is often alleged of irregularities. Such clubs thus are likely to make all possible efforts to prevent any disciplinary action by the RCA executive and owe their alliance to the dominant fraction. Its vote of these clubs that decide positions at district cricket association and many of the DCA may soon witness midterm elections.

The RCA executive officials, however, deny any alternative objects and maintain that the committee is constituted ‘in the interest of cricket’.

The politics prevails

  • The officials though admit that several of the  DCAs have discrepancies in their functioning and controversy surrounding appointment of officials. Yet, as the Modi camp will attempt to defend its clubs, politics will have cricket in state divided even further.
