Rajasthan: NSUI march runs into baton force, 300 held

Jaipur police on Wednesday charged batons to disperse a gathering of NSUI (National Student Union of India) volunteers who were marching to stage a sit in front of the CMR (Chief minister residence), Civil Lines. Nearly 300 students were detained by the police who later were let off at distant police circles of the city.

As a call given the volunteers of NSUI, a student wing of Congress, gathered at its office situated at Bani Park. At 12.15 pm, they marched towards the CMR in the leadership of NSUI national president Fairoz Khan and state president Abhimanyu Punia. The police, though, stopped them at collector circle, to which they protested and cops had to use batons.

The water cannons were also used to disperse the gathering. When the volunteers tried to move further, police detained nearly 300 students and released them at distant police station circle- Ashok Nagar and Murlipura.

“We were carrying march silently but the police suddenly charged batons. Our 300 volunteers were picked by the police and we were not allowed to carry out the march towards the CMR,” said Punia, criticizing the police to use force against them. The NSUI leader had made the announcement of the march in advance and apprised police of the same, but the cops did not permit it.

The Congress student wing gave a call to stage sit in front of the CMR on August 1 protesting alleged growing unemployment in Rajasthan and irregularities in disbursing of scholarship to ST/SC. The wing blamed the Raje government for failing miserably to fulfill poll promises, particularly 15 lakhs employment.
