Rajasthan: No travel alarm yet, but operators keeping an eye on the health scare

Though zika virus is spreading its tentacles in the state, the tourism industry has stayed immune from its impact on the business.  The tourism season has just begun and tourist footfall, on the bookings made in last few months, has been considerable. Tour operators inform that the industry has so far not been affected, however, they are keeping a check on the situation so that they can accordingly guide tourists if they have a query about the zika virus’ spread in the state. 

The monsoon is currently retreating from the state and this is the time when tourism season starts in the state. The season will go on till February-March and bookings to visit various forts and palaces have already been made by international tourists much before in advance.

Wildlife parks have also opened after monsoon while  Ranthambhore and Sariska are already witnessing good tourist turnout. Given the spread of Zika virus, tourist operators are keeping their fingers crossed hoping that things won’t change for worse and the tourism industry will witness a good season this year. In fact, the tourism industry in the state is expecting that several tourists who must have planned a getaway to Kerala may this time visit Rajasthan as the floods ravaged the state and is now in the process of recovery. 

One more patient infected with zika Virus has been detected in Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan. This is the second laboratory-confirmed Zika virus case in state, that has emerged during the last 12 days when the first ever Zika infection case in the state and the fourth in the country was confirmed by National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune.

“The situation could be dangerous because till date department is screening and surveying only. No prevention or protection activity has yet been taken up in the affected areas,” an official with the health department said.
Tourism industry is one of the largest money making sectors in the state and provides direct and indirect employment to a large number of people in the state. Only time will tell how things will pan out.

Tourist Season On

According to tour operators, there is no alarm over zika virus cases being reported in Jaipur at the onset of the tourist season. But they are keeping an eye out for any further development in the detection and spread of the virus. “We have to inform our clients, particularly, the foreign tourists,” an agent said.
