In a unique initiative to spread menstrual hygiene awareness, a movement has been launched in Rajasthan, with a plan to reach 1,00,000 school children across the state during this year. Figures show that a lack of menstrual hygiene awareness prevails in Rajasthan, where the literacy rate stands at 67.1 per cent, much below the national literacy rate of 71 per cent.  Literacy amongst women and girls is even lower, standing at only 52.12 %, owing to the staggering number of girls dropping out of education once they begin menstruation due to limited access to safe menstrual hygiene and knowledge.

“The campaign, launched during the 63rd NATCON conference in Jaipur, is to raise awareness and tackle the prevalent issues of menstrual hygiene awareness to keep girls in education,” Richa Singh, CEO of Niine sanitary napkins said. “The activities will be led by the Niine Movement, an initiative to bridge the gap between the 18% of menstruating females in India using sanitary napkins, and the 82% predominantly engaging in unhygienic practices,” she added.

To achieve the target, the Niine Movement launched a 3E plan, which includes Educating girls, women, boys, and men, of good menstrual hygiene practices; Enrolling citizens and existing menstrual hygiene product users in a supportive, taboo-free environment, to create an open forum for discussion and deliberation and; Enhancing the sanitation sector by providing the best quality menstrual hygiene products at appropriate prices.

“In association with various health and education institutions, the Niine Movement has initiated school-based workshops in 10 schools, distributing sanitary napkins to over 500 participants. The campaign plans to reach to 1,00,000 school children in Rajasthan by the end of 2019,” said Singh.

Starting in the Jaipur District, this campaign will extend its reach to 590 villages including Sikar, Churu and Jhunjhunu as part of a two-fold plan: firstly, to organise workshops to improve menstrual hygiene education and secondly, the free supply of its sanitary napkins to ensure quality menstrual sanitation products are accessible.
