Rajasthan Mahila Congress has urged the party high command to give tickets to women leaders in 5-10 Lok Sabha seats out of 25. The proposal was discussed in a meeting which the women wing held at the PCC headquarters for the coming Lok Sabha election preparations.

“Our party workers toiled in the Assembly elections and now they are ready to face the Lok Sabha elections. We are not raising demand of quota for the women but the party should give at-least 5-10 seats to the women candidates.

Our party is focused to increase representation of women in organisation and government and hence Congress chief Rahul Gandhi is yielding pressure on Modi government to pass 33 percent reservation to women,” said Neetu Verma, AIMC (All India Mahila Congress) general secretary and Rajasthan incharge. The meeting was chaired by Rajasthan Mahila Congress president Rehana Reyaz Chisti.

The women cell so far did not receive any application from the women leaders whose names could be pressed as Lok Sabha candidates, though the AIMC is soon to start the process.

“In the meeting we discussed Lok Sabha preparations. The AIMC headed by Sushmita Devi will soon launch a process to scan possible women candidates who could be fielded for LS,” added Verma.

It is worth mentioning here that the Gandhi scion has been advocating for increasing women representation in the organisation and the government. During Rajasthan Assembly campaign he reiterated for increasing the representation of women and instructed the party office bearers to give opportunity to the women. Ironically, women representation in the candidature remained very less. The party had fielded 27 women candidates in 2018 Assembly elections that amounts to 14 percent of 195 MLAs contested.

In wake of Rahul’s latest call for women reservation bill the women leaders have become active and are hoping for an increase of their share in the candidature.

In 2014 Lok Sabha elections the Congress had fielded 6 women candidates but all lost to BJP in Modi wave and all 25 seats in state were won by the BJP.
