Thousands of unsold properties at housing board’s inventory came on foremost concern for the urban development minister’s first review of the department in this tenure. The minister agreed upon a long felt need of lowering the rate slabs to make the properties more ‘affordable’. “The minister has instructed for the appointment of a committee for disposing of the 22,000 unsold properties, the committee will suggest a market relevant pricing for these,” said an official.

Rajasthan Housing Board (RHB) has attempted several schemes to sell of these buildings, but a slack down in urban development market has obstructed the board’s plan. Even as the board slowed on initiation of new units over the past years, its inventory continued to swell on account of those to get complete in the period. The solution of lowering prices got contemplated several times in the past year, the previous state government, however, left the issue undecided.

“We will restore Rajasthan Housing Board to its old glory,” said urban development minister, Shanti Dhariwal. It’s the third tenure of Dhariwal in the past two decades as the urban development minister. The housing board has emerged as a premier developer of affordable housing, however, for past few years, the department has been losing its relevance.

“Along with selling the existing properties, new schemes will be initiated with a positive approach of the minister,” a senior urban development officer expressed optimism following the change in state regime in recent assembly polls.

During the assembly election too, Congress has made a couple of promises related to housing board in its manifesto. These included revival of the department and as an initial step, the minister went to decrease margins for capitalizing non-performing assets. These also include instructions for an auction of commercial properties of the board and seeking options for public-private partnerships.
