Rajasthan govt set to distribute smart phones to visually impaired

Visually impaired persons will soon be able to connect with virtual world with the help of a smart phone. The Vasundhara Raje government is going to distribute blind friendly smart phones completely free across the state.

Visually impaired persons will soon be able to connect with virtual world with the help of a smart phone. The Vasundhara Raje government is going to distribute blind friendly smart phones completely free across the state.   

This phone has special features that enable visually impaired people to use it easily. The state has 3,14,618 people including 1,56,044 male and 1,58,574 females who are suffering from blindness. Department for persons with special abilities is working on providing this gift to them.

The phones will be distributed under the joint assistance scheme in which department will pay Rs 10,000 per blind person while remaining Rs 2,000 will be funded by donors.

The government will buy 100 smart phones from Kanour-based Alimco company and chief minister Vasundhara Raje will soon distribute the phones. Thereafter, in a phased manner the phone will be distributed in every district. Earlier, these phones were distributed in Himachal Pradesh. 

These phones are not available in market as they are specifically made for the blind by the government.

Digital technology has changed people’s lives and now they will connect visually impaired persons with the world.

“Vasundhara government will distribute smart phones to the blind to connect them with the mainstream. It will have many blind friendly features. We are trying for early distribution of these phones by CM Vasundhara Raje followed by distribution at district level in a phased manner,” Arun Chaturvedi, social justice and empowerment minister.

“This will be a useful scheme for blind divyangs. Smart phones are necessity in our daily routine. We will distribute smart phones to more than 3.14 lakh blind people. Almico company of Kanour has been given order. The cost of phone is Rs 12,000 of which Rs 10,000 will be borne by the government and rest will be collected from donors,” Anupama Jorwal, director department for specially abled persons.

“If government gives us smart phone, it will change our life. We cannot see but we will be able to feel it. This will act as eyes for us and students will also get help in reading,” Narendra Kumar, Music Teacher.

Smart features

  • Top Back— As the blind person touches the screen, all necessary features will appear on the screen. The app will tell the user about which app is being used. They will be given training to operate the phone and features on top back will be set according to them.
  • Screen reader— It will work in four languages including Hindi, English, Bengali and Gujarati. The calls and application will interact with the user in local language. When someone calls, the phone will tell caller’s name or number.It will also be the ringtone of the phone. When a number is dialed it will tell the user name of the person.
  • Magnifier— This feature is for people with poor vision as they can zoom the screen and read.They will also get help from vibrate feature.
