Commercial institutions along the Gopalpura Bypass remained shut on Friday protesting sealing by Jaipur Development Authority (JDA). The traders accuse the authority officials of harassment on pretext of complying with High Court orders.

“Commercial institutions at the Gopalpura Bypass are being selectively targeted, while such activities are rampant across the city,” alleged a trader fearing sealing of his business. “The authority officials unnecessarily hinder land use conversion and harass the traders,” he added.

Sealing of unauthorised commercial activities from residential area has struck panic among the traders. The JDA has recently sealed 20 such properties at the 10B Scheme Colony along the bypass and issued notices to several others in compliance with the orders of Rajasthan High Court. The traders allege that the officials have been threatening commercial institutes outside the scheme area too.

Fearing similar action against other commercial properties along the bypass, Gopalpura Traders’ Association had called for a shut down protest. Traders agitating against the JDA received sympathies from the Opposition Congress with Pratap Singh Khachariyawas assuring his support to the traders.

There are around 5 lakh big and small commercial activities being conducted from residential areas across Jaipur. The drive at 10B Colony is a result of protest from local residents who are displeased with commercial activities running in their neighbourhood. The high court had decided in favour of the residents, it was only after a contempt suit that the authorities jumped to action.

Traders of Gopalpura Bypass remain apprehensive as the area had witnessed largest evacuation drive an year ago. Hundreds of illegal constructions along the road were razed by the JDA.
