Rajasthan farmers worried as frost damages crops

At a time when the state government is promising farmers with loan waivers and is laying stress on availability of urea, the immediate concern for the farmers is the damage being done to the vegetables due to extreme cold conditions.

In several parts of the state, smaller farmers who are not able to get the benefit of any government insurance scheme is worried about the damage of vegetables like Brinjal, cumin, mustard and other vegetables. The early morning frost can be seen on the plants and crops

Sources informed that in Jhalawar there has been damage to brinjal and other vegetables while in Kota too damage is seen in vegetables. Farmers inform that their produce of brinjal has been damaged and is of no use now.

In Jalore, the damage has been done to cumin crop due to extreme weather conditions with the mercury reaching zero degrees in certain areas and farmers are taking measures to save it from frost.

In Sadulshehar too standing crops are getting affected due to cold weather. Farmers informed that there is danger of vegetables and fruits like mustard and kinnow getting damaged due to this extreme cold weather conditions.

The state government is currently working out a blueprint to implement the farm loan waiver scheme in the state. A committee of ministers of various departments was recently formed and first meeting of this committee is proposed to be held on Saturday, however, how the government plans to offer some help to the farmers whose vegetables have been damaged due to cold weather is yet to be seen.

While the vegetables are covered in Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMSBY) how much help it will be able to provide to the farmers is yet not known. 

As per the norms, vegetable whose sowing is done in 50 hectares area or above is eligible for getting the benefit and usually the small farmers sow vegetables in less area as prescribed under the norm.

Meanwhile, the department of agriculture has issued advisory to the farmers. It has suggested them about various measures which could be deployed to save the crops from adverse effect of frost.

Tough times ahead
