Rajasthan: District Collectors to help contain zika spread

Now, district collectors have been given responsibility to ensure proper execution of preventive activities to stop any possible outbreak of mosquito-borne diseases in their respective districts.

The state government is on its toes in the wake of the recent outbreak of Zika virus in Jaipur and increasing cases of seasonal diseases in other parts of the state. Now, district collectors have been given responsibility to ensure proper execution of preventive activities to stop any possible outbreak of mosquito borne diseases in their respective districts.

On Thursday, chief secretary DB Gupta held a meeting of all district collectors and chief medical & health officers (CM&HO) of through video conferencing and directed them to ensure effective preventive activities and ensure treatment of any reported case of seasonal disease or Zika virus. Gupta also took stock of facilities available at district hospitals.

Gupta said that the effective monitoring is the key to ensure that a single case of disease could not turn into outbreak so he instructed administrative officers in the state up to block level to cross check the activities and measure undertaken by the health department officials. He also directed CM&HOs to not allow leave for any medical officer in their respective districts.

After uproar over 29 Zika virus positive cases in Jaipur, the state health and family welfare minister Kalicharan Saraf finally found time to inspect the Shastri Nagar area on Wednesday. It has been 19 days since the first case in Rajasthan and fifth in India was reported. Neither the minister, nor any of his minions or the babus visited the place or answered the queries. 

Before that, it took more than a fortnight for health department officials including Additional Chief Secretary (Health) Veenu Gupta to talk to the media about the situation of Zika virus in Rajsthan.

Saraf had visited the Kavantia Hospital and the control room set up at sector 3 area in Shastri Nagar Housing Board with local legislator and minister for Social Justice department Arun Chaturvedi to take stock of the situation.

The district collectors have been asked to ensure treatment of any reported case of seasonal disease or Zika virus. Chief secy DB Gupta also took stock of facilities at the district hospitals.
