Diesel, which was usually considered as a cheaper alternative to petrol and as preferred by customers buying vehicles, has been inching closer to petrol in terms of pricing. At present, the gap between petrol and diesel rates has been reduced to just Rs 4 per litre in the city.

On Thursday, the rate of diesel was Rs 75.69 per litre, while the rate of petrol was Rs 79.65 per litre making diesel cheaper to petrol by merely Rs 3.75 per litre.

This reduction in the gap has been going for last several days and diesel has been slowly moving closer and could eventually be priced as the same as petrol in coming weeks, if the present trend continues.

When the year started, in January this year, there was a gap of Rs 8 per litre between diesel and petrol. Now, in the second last month of 2018, the gap has narrowed down to less than Rs 4 per litre. Put simply, this entire shift in price points has happened in less than a year.

Auto experts point out that its a slow change which started few years back, probably in 2016, when the gap between the two fuel started reducing.

There was a time when there was a huge gap between the two, but thereafter successive governments started reducing the price of petrol and increasing the price of diesel, informed a seasoned investor in petroleum products.
“There was a time when diesel cars were bought as the cost of diesel was less, not any more,” said Manish Khandelwal, a customer who is planning to buy a new car this dhanteras.

Few days ago, it was reported that the diesel had become costlier than petrol in Odisha. Experts maintain that the world over, the processing cost of diesel is more than petrol and petrol in many countries is cheaper than diesel.

However, over the last few days, the rates of both petrol and diesel have been reducing offering some measure of relief to the commuters.

In the last two days, the rates of both fuels were stable and there was no change in the prices on October 30 and 31. The rates have further reduced on November 1.

In the month of September alone, VAT on petrol was reduced from 30 to 26 per cent and on diesel from 22 to 18 per cent, thereby, bringing some relief to the people who were seeing increasing rates after the crude oil prices started going up in the international market.

Thereafter, a reduction in excise duty also brought down the prices of fuel. However, after that the rates started climbing again.

Gap less than Rs 4
