The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wants to reap a rich harvest of farmers’ votes by announcing the biggest sop in the poll year in the form of farm loan waiver scheme.

Conscious of the fact that the Congress leaders are breathing down their necks, the BJP is making sure that in no way the Congress hoodwink the farmers.

To this effect, the BJP legislators are writing letters to farmers in their area, telling them that the BJP government has waived off their bank loans while also underscoring information that the Congress party never exempted farmers of any loan. To ensure they get the entire credit and their efforts are recognised, BJP state leaders have instructed all the MLAs and party office-bearers that the farmers should be apprised of the loan waiver scheme and must stress the fact that it is BJP government that has waived off their loan.

According to sources, BJP MLAs have prepared data of the number of farmers in their area, their bank loan amount and outstanding interest amount. Now, the legislators are writing letters to the farmers of their respective constituencies. The letters mention information about the bank loan of farmers and outstanding interest while giving credit to chief minister Vasundhara Raje for the scheme.

“Farmers are simple human beings. They only know that the loan is being waived off by the government. They do not know whether it is BJP government or any other political party which has waived off their debt. Congressmen mislead the farmers and say that Congress party has waived off their debts. I have written a letter to all 11,000 farmers in my area. In the letter, we informed the farmers that the Congress never waived off their bank loans. I have also written my mobile number so that the farmers can contact me directly if there is any problem,” a ruling party’s legislator told DNA.

The loan waiver scheme is aimed to waive off loans up to Rs 50,000 of small and marginal farmers and is expected to give benefit to more than 29 lakh farmers across the state. The inaugural camp was held in Banswara on Thursday while from June 4, regular camps across the state will be organised to distribute the certificates.
