The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has busted a gang involved in illegal trade of antique and exquisite idols and items. The gang was trying to fence off an antique idol made of ivory. Interestingly, the said idol depicts a female member of the royal family of Singapore and is over hundred years old which is valued at more than a crore of rupees in international market. The ATS sleuths posed as clients in front of the gang members and arrested five men in this regard.
The ATS sleuths had received intel from sources that a gang was trying to fence antique idols made of ivory. “A special team was immediately formed which developed the information further. The team identified the gang members and established a contact with them. The ATS sleuths posed as clients and offered to buy the idol,” said Umesh Mishra, Additional Director General (ADG) – ATS and SOG.
The gang asked them to travel to Ajmer. “The cops reached the hotel where a deal was struck thus verifying that the gang was indeed in possession of an illegal item. The cops, who had been kept in waiting for raid, were given a signal and the ATS team raided the spot and nabbed five men.
They have been identified as Mahendra Charan, Bhajan Singh, Ajaypal alias Shey Singh, Suryakant and Ramchandra. The idol was confiscated from the gang,” officials said.
The men revealed the actual details of the idol then. “They confessed that the idol was made of ivory which is illegal to keep in India and was made for a Queen from Singapore Royal family over hundred years ago. The idol is valued at more than one crore rupees in international market. A case against the accused have been then registered in Civil Lines Police station in Ajmer under Wildlife Protection Act, Indian penal Code and Continental Act, 1973.
They were produced before court and a three-day remand has been obtained. Moreover, a police team was sent for search operation at Mahendra Singh’s house where the team found a live turtle. Further action in that matter is being taken against Mahendra’s son,” the ADG said.
