Over 50 Congress leaders who lost the Rajasthan Assembly election in 2013 with a margin of over 20,000 votes do not stand eligible to get a ticket in the upcoming Assembly polls, if the party adheres to the yardsticks set by the Antony Panel recommendations.

A panel headed by former defense minister AK Antony, probed the party’s disastrous debacle in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and recommended to the Congress High Command dos and don’ts to improve party’s election prospects whenever it goes to polls.

Recommendations were also made to reject the claim of tickets by a candidate who lost election by over 20,000 votes, those who lost the elections consecutively and also the candidature of the kin or relatives of senior leader needs to be rejected.

If this yardstick mentioned in the recommendations is implemented during ticket distribution in Rajasthan then over 50 candidates might not get the ticket. Even if a consideration is made to increase the 20,000 votes to a new benchmark of 40,000 then too over a dozen present politicians stand to lose ticket.

As per the statistics uploaded on the website of the state election office, the Congress candidates who lost the election battle with highest margins are Bhagwan Sahay Saini (42,000) from Chomu, Archana Sharma (48,000) from Malviya Nagar, Sanjay Bapna (65,000) from Sanganer, Dr Prahlad Raghu (46,000) from Bagru, Narendra Sharma (62,000) from Alwar Rural, Naseem Akhtar Insaf (41,000) from Pushkar, Manoj Chouhan (42,000) from Beawar, Bina Kak (43,000) from Sumerpur, Rampal Soni (46,000) from Bhilwara, Pankaj Mehta (50,000) from Kota South, Madan Lal (51,000) from Dag and Meenakshi Chandrawat (60,000).

“The party did not implement the recommendations in Delhi, Gujarat and UP Assembly elections, where the candidates who lost badly were given the ticket again. In any election, the only thing that matters is the ‘winning’ candidate. If any candidate, who has lost in past, is found eligible on these grounds, then he will certainly get a ticket,” said a senior Congress leader.

Apart from this, Modi wave is another excuse that the losing candidates list, while trying to strengthen their prospects of being fielded again in the election slated for December end. “Many veteran leaders of Gehlot Cabinet lost election in 2013, just because of Modi wave. The Congress was reduced to only 21 seats which was a historical defeat of party ever in Rajasthan. It was an unbelievable defeat under unbelievable circumstances and the party high command knows it well. Hence, many who lost back then have reasons to claim for a ticket again,” said a Congress candidate who lost the election in 2013.
