The BJP has tried to balance the choices of chief minister Vasundhara Raje by offering a chance to candidates backed by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in its first list of candidates declared for the state assembly elections, on Sunday. The sangh leaders in Rajasthan have ensured they got their pound of flesh by convincing the party to field their pet favourites.

Prominent among the Sangh leaders who made it to the list of the candidates, is former minister Madan Dilawar. Dilawar, a firebrand leader who didn’t see eye to eye with Raje in her previous stint has got a ticket for assembly elections after ten years.

Dilawar is the Dalit face of the party in Hadauti region and has been throughout associated with the Sangh and its affiliates. The party, however, refused to give him the ticket to contest the 2008 and 2013 assembly elections. Chandrakanta Meghwal was given ticket from Ramganj Mandi in his place. Meghwal has been a legislator for ten years. Dilawar was made a state spokesperson a month ago.

Sanjay Sharma, considered to be one of the RSS core team in Rajasthan, has been given ticket from Alwar city. Sharma was also the ticket contender in the last assembly elections. But he was denied a ticket. After the death of Alwar MP Mahant Chandnath, Alwar BJP functionaries proposed Sanjay Sharma’s name for the by-elections. But Raje’s choice, cabinet minister Jaswant Yadav got the ticket and lost the polls.

Now, Sharma has been fielded for assembly elections from Alwar city instead of the current legislator Banwarilal Singhal.

In the last assembly elections, the BJP had fielded two Muslim candidates Habibur Rahaman and Younus Khan. This time Habibur Rahman did not get the ticket in the first list. He has been replaced by Mohan Ram Chaudhary.

Chaudhary is a RSS pet. He has been associated with RSS for a long time. Similarly, Ritu Banawat, wife of Rishi Bansal, former organization secretary and former Parcharak of the RSS’ students wing ABVP, has been given ticket from Bayna. Last year, Ritu had contested the elections as rebel candidate against the BJP’s official candidate.

RSS volunteer and one of the state spokespersons, Satish Poonia, has been again given a ticket from Amber. Poonia had contested election from Amber in the last assembly elections. He had lost the election by less than 300 votes in a triangular contest. Poonia has earlier been associated with party posts in the state headquarters.
