They were once the loyals, who swore by their party, worked for their party and held prominent positions in their parties; but denial of ticket has turned them into rebels who are today positioned against their own party and fighting elections as Independents. Rajasthan has a dozen rebels putting up a tough fight against their own alma mater.

The rebels are not limited to any single party; both Congress and BJP have several - and they pose tough competition to the party they had once belonged to. But at the same time both parties are eyeing them with expectation and strategising to be on the good side of these rebels in case they win and their support is needed.

Congress had expelled 28 rebels and BJP 11. Those who are prominently on the radar of both parties include former ministers Babulal Nagar, Mahadev, Khandela Nathuram Sinodia and Alok Beniwal of Congress, Rajkumar Rinwa, Surendra Goyal, Om Prakash Hudla of BJP. Nagar, who had always said that Congress is his mother and Ashok Gehlot his God, had lost his ministerial berth after a rape allegation. He was absolved of charges but was denied ticket due to a pending appeal. “Ticket distribution was unfair. Divya Maderna gets ticket even as her father has been found guilty for the murder of Bhanwari Devi and is in jail. Babulal Ji is denied despite being found not guilty - that too for a pending appeal,” said a Nagar supporter.

BJP rebel in Ratangarh Rinwa, a minister in BJP government lost out to “Denying ticket to Rinwaji was plotting on part of some leaders of this area  who felt threatened by his popularity. If it was not so, the why get a person from the same community as Rinwaji to join BJP and get a ticket the next day,” said a supporter of Rinwa.

Beniwal, son of former Gujarat governor Kamla Beniwal too is contesting from Shahpura. “The reason for which he was denied a ticket has not been followed for others, Alokji had no option but to fight independent,” said a supporter. Similar sentiments are expressed by supporters of Goyal, Khandela, Sinodia and Hudla.
