BJP has performed well but failed to gain simple majority in the Assembly this time; Congress managed 10 seats in Mewar region while Indian Tribal Party grabbed 2 seats
It will be for the first time for the BJP that despite winning 15 seats out of 28 in the Mewar region, the party will not be able to form the government in the state. The BJP has performed well for the second time in the Mewar region but failed to gain simple majority in the Assembly this time.
Like many surprises that sprung up in 2018 Assembly elections, the Mewar region considered as the gateway to government, has broken the trend. Congress, which is going to form government, managed to get only 10 seats out of 28 seats in the Mewar region while an Independent candidate has won a seat. An unknown party, Indian Tribal Party has grabbed two seats.
The Mewar region includes six districts—Udaipur, Rajsamand, Dungarpur, Chittorgarh, Pratapgarh and Banswara—that covers 28 Assembly seats. The party which gets the majority in Mewar forms government in the state. That is why Mewar is important for both Congress and BJP. The identity of Mewar region is that it is a tribal region and has an important role in the state’s politics.
The importance of Mewar on the political landscape of the state can be estimated by the fact that chief minister Vasundhara Raje started her Rajasthan Gaurav Yatra from Rajsamand, a crucial part of the region. The first phase of the yatra was conducted in Udaipur division and BJP national president Amit Shah himself flew down to Charbhuja and flagged off the Gaurav Yatra. Congress is not far behind as the party president Rahul Gandhi also held a Sankalp Rally on September 20 in Sangwara, Dungarpur. BJP national president also conducted roadshow in Udaipur during the election campaign.
Both the Congress and BJP had fielded their strong candidates in the 28 Assembly seats of six districts of the region. The most interesting contest was in Udaipur city and Nathdwara seats. Senior BJP leader and home minister Gulab Chand Kataria won from Udaipur constituency. Kataria defeated senior Congress leader and former Union minister Girija Vyas. BJP won six of the eight seats in Udaipur district. Vasundhara Raje’s cabinet minister Shrichand Kriplani lost the election at Nimbahera seat while former Congress state president and former Union Minister CP Joshi won from Nathdwara.
The trend witnessed in previous years indicates that the public extends unanimous support to one political party during elections and only that outfit makes its way to form the government in the state. Congress in 1998, BJP in 2003 and Congress in 2008 and BJP again in 2013 emerged victorious on the maximum number of seats in the region and formed the government in Rajasthan. BJP went on to form the government in state riding on its victories in 21 seats of Mewar in 2003. Congress had won 7 seats back then. In 2008, Congress candidates won 20 of the 28 Assembly segments in 6 districts while BJP had to settle with 6 seats.
In the last Assembly elections, BJP won 25 out of 28 seats in Mewar while Congress could claim a hold on two seats and independent Randhir Singh Bhindar grabbed one seat.
