If Gehlot stole the show on counting day by serving tea to guests and party leaders arriving at his official residence in Civil Lines, supporters of Pradesh Congress Committee president, Sachin Pilot, thronged the gates of the party headequarters in Jaipur where the CLP meeting was underway. They were carrying placards and posters brandishing Sachin as the yuva chehra (Youth Face) of the state. Their sloganeering was also hinged around billing Pilot as the worthy brand ambassdor of Rajasthan.

While the battle for supremacy between Pilot and Gehlot continued inside the PCC office till late in the night, a proxy was being fought between their supporters outside the headquarters. Led by the committed aides, the supporters of the two leaders engaged in a show of strength. Ram Swarup, a Gehlot fan said only the two-time chief minister was capable of leading the state. “He deserves a third chance. Only he can clear the mess left behind by the BJP government,” Swarup who was wearing a Gehlot mask peeped behind from the hollowed out eyes to speak his mind.

Near the barricading, where the cops had stationed themselves and were as eager as the workers who were clamouring to have a dekho of their favourite leader, a Mahendra Pareek, a Congress worker, said he was here to root for Pilot. “Yuva neta hain (he is a young leader). Gehlot also got a chance when he was young and became a PCC chief early on. he should now set the same example by giving Pilot a chance,” Pareek said.

The tension inside the room where the deliberations were on between the senior Congress leaders and the elected legislators, rubbed off against the workers who were waiting outside for the verdict.

Since Tuesday when counting revealed the Congress was returning to power, the supporters of both leaders have found ways to cheer their choice of the CM candidate. While some have been discreet and others have not hesitated to float a fan-club to have their voice heard, some like Pratap Singh Khachariyawas, the newly elected MLA from Civil Lines constituency in Jaipur were vocal in their support of the candidate. The MLA had questioned Gehlot’s statement on CM probables in Rajasthan.
