An angry mob, in Pratapgarh district pelted stones at a police station and damaged the property, on Monday, while agitating after a local tribal leader was arrested by the cops in connection with a minor’s rape.
The mob even snatched away a rifle from a guard after which the cops had to resort to use of force to scatter the mob. Tear gas shells were fired to disperse the crowd. Additional forces have been deployed till the time normalcy returns to the affected area.
The incident occurred in Salamgarh town of the district. “Two weeks back, a minor girl was raped in Salamgarh after which a meeting had been called at Sakhthali where a few speakers, with their speeches, motivated the crowd to take law in their hands so that pressure can be mounted on cops to free an accused. The police had to resort to use of force to maintain law and order and after this the situation turned worst. The cops also arrested a tribal leader for inciting the crowd,” officials said.

“The crowd reached Salamgarh police station in an agitated manner and then they started pelting stones. Some anti-social elements entered the police station and damaged the property while also snatching a rifle from a guard. Due to this additional forces were called in and the police fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. Additional forces have been deployed in the area and although there is no agitation taking place and situation is under control right now, there is a tension in the area. A cop had been injured in the agitation and has been admitted to hospital,” officials said.
