Rajasthan Administrative Service officer gets 45 lakh Chevening scholarship

The scholarship offered by the United Kingdom government is part of its international award scheme to promote global leaders and help them develop professionally and academically.

Aqueel Ahmed, a Rajasthan Administrative Service officer of 2006 batch, has been awarded the prestigious Chevening scholarship. 

At present he is posted as sub-divisional magistrate in Dungarpur area. 

He has become the first RAS officer to be selected for the scholarship to pursue masters in Governance, Development and Public Policy from the University of Sussex.

“It is indeed an honour to be awarded with the prestigious scholarship. University of Sussex is a global leader among institutes of development studies,” said a cheerful Aqueel.

The scholarship offered by the United Kingdom government is part of its international award scheme to promote global leaders and help them develop professionally and academically. 

Funded by Foreign and Commonwealth Office, it covers academic expenses, travel expenses and other allowances aggregating to approximately 50000 pound sterling (nearly Rs 45 lakh). The scholarship is offered to individuals who excel in several criteria including their leadership qualities.

A post graduate student from Delhi University, Aqueel has set up a non-profit organisation WeCan in 2003. 

The organisation works for educational uplift of students of financially backward and minority community and has nearly expanded to establish 8 schools with 3,000 students. He has also been part of several social initiatives in the state.

He became the first officer from his cadre to be selected to work as an assistant private secretary to union minister CP Joshi during tenure of the UPA government. In the duration he had been part of initiatives made in direction of E-tolling of highways.
