Who will win the Ramgarh assembly seat, is a question that the political corridors of Rajasthan are abuzz with. The results of the lone by-elections in this critical assembly seat in Alwar holds importance for both the Ashok Gehlot government and the BJP which is left to lick its wounds after its electoral defeat in the December polls.

The results of elections to this constituency will be announced Thursday when the poll officers will count votes to decide the fate of 20 candidates in fray. The assembly by election is crucial for the Gehlot government as it would endorse the measures taken in a short span or for the lack of it. For the BJP, it would hold the candle to its improved chances in the general  elections in May this year.

Alwar is a district where Congress has under performed during the assembly elections. Congress managed to secure 4 out of 10 seats polled in the elections in Alwar in December 2018. The BSP, Independents and BJP each won two seats in the polls. The big shock, however, for the party was when its sitting MP Karan Singh Yadav not only lost the election from Kisahangarh Bas constituency but came at third place.

The Congress has bet on Safia Khan, wife of senior Congress leader Juber Khan, from the seat. Sources said the entire election is being steered by former Alwar MP Jitendra Singh, a close aide of Rahul Gandhi, who wishes to contest the Lok Sabha election from Alwar again. An adverse result could be a major setback to his strategy and chances of re-election.

The BJP is likely going to make a poll issue during the elections to corner Gehlot government, if the Congress fails in its attempt to bag the seat. It could be troublesome for Gehlot government in the budget session in Rajasthan assembly which starts from February 11.

Winning the seat, will not only give Congress a tally of 100 in the 200-member House, it will also be a major blow to the BJP that is already reeling under the assembly election defeat. For BJP chief Madan Lal Saini, it would be a tough walk ahead. Former chief minister Vasundhara Raje has steered clear of campaigning in the state.

Ramgarh constituency was earlier represented by BJP’s Gyan Dev Ahuja who hit the headlines for his controversial statements, be it the condom culture remark on JNU or protecting the mob that lynched persons allegedly involved in cow smuggling.

BJP chose Sukhwant Singh, a former pradhan, in place of Ahuja, who hardly countered any controversy. During the campaigning nobody, be it Congress or BJP, made such statements that could polarize the elections.

The contest has turned triangular with the entry of Jagat Singh. BSP fielded Singh, son of former foreign minister Natwar Singh. He had won as MLA on BJP ticket from Kaman in Bharatpur in 2013. When he was denied ticket, he switched sides and decided to contest the election on Ramgarh seat.
