About 1,000 spools of banned Chinese manja (alloy-coated string) have been seized and destroyed in various markets of the city in the last 10 days.

The action was taken under a drive initiated by Kota Municipal Corporation (KMC) team under the directions of Kota district magistrate and KMC commissioner against the banned Chinese manja and several cases under section 188 and 336 of IPC have been lodged against the offending traders. The drive against the banned alloy-coated string is still going on and will continue till Makar Sankranti on January 14.

KMC team, along with the police personnel, has been continuously monitoring the sale of Chinese manja and carrying out raids in the shops suspected to be selling the banned manja, said KMC fire officer Rakesh Vyas.

The team has so far seized and destroyed at least 1,000 spools of banned manja, including the 51 spools of Chinese manja seized on Friday from the shops in Nayapura area of the city, he said. The seized spools of Chinese manja were destroyed on the spot, he added. “Chinese manja is dangerous to human as well as birds’ life and sale and purchase of it is a violation of order by DM under section 144 of Cr. P.C.,” said ASP, Kota city, Rajesh Mill. ‘

“We are taking action against the offenders under section 188 and 336 of IPC,” the ASP said, claiming several cases have been registered against the kite and manja traders.

At least more than 10 cases were yesterday registered at various police stations of the city under section 188 and 336 of IPC against the traders for allegedly selling the banned manja in the city, said Neeraj Gupta, SHO at Vigyan Nagar police station.

One trader was yesterday arrested and booked under the same sections for selling banned manja and was later in the evening bailed out, SHO Gupta said.

Meanwhile, the wildlife activists have called the drive against Chinese manja an eyewash, just a formality and demanded to trace and arrest the big manufacturers and suppliers of the banned manja.
